For over 35 years, Gary Mitchell’s career in law enforcement was only part of his story. He also volunteered his time and expertise to a community center for low-income children and adults, believing the best neighbor is the one who takes the time to get to know you.

Over the years, a deteriorating spine and heart have left him totally dependent on a walker, and that’s only because he refuses to depend on a wheelchair. His house has born the brunt of his physical limitations and in 2010 he was nominated for assistance from Rebuilding Together Long Beach.

The bedroom ceiling anchoring a fan was collapsing, the bathroom sink did not function, an overgrown backyard was not accessible because of a broken sliding back door, and the house exterior needed to be sanded and repainted.

On a gray April morning, over 65 volunteers reported to Gary’s front door with ladders, paint, landscaping equipment, and construction tools. Skilled “team captains” split up the volunteers into teams, and painting, hauling, carpentry, and plumbing got underway.

By late afternoon, the sun filled the sky and shone on Mr. Mitchell’s freshly painted house. (We have pictures to prove it!) Even the neighbors noticed, and stopped by to visit. This was a good day.
