• Neighborhood build for six residents
• All homes leveled due to settling
• Exterior painting
• Repairs to handrails, decks and screens
The Challenge: Use volunteers to paint 6 homes in one day.
The Solution: Rebuilding Together Long Beach and 190 wonderful volunteers
That overcast October morning the senior House Captain divided the volunteers into teams, each led by an experienced house captain. Fortunately professional painter Carlos Perez donated his time and equipment to power wash all six properties prior to the workday. Volunteers from CSU Long Beach were able to get straight to work prepping and painting the homes.
Experienced carpenters from the Long Beach City College Carpentry Training Program worked on leveling the homes and fixing the handrails and decks. Many of the windows and doors would not close until the homes were leveled, which was necessary because the park is built on an old landfill and the ground is constantly moving. Now, homeowners will have increased window operability and enhanced energy efficiency.
Rebuilding Together Long Beach volunteers were able to secure a variety of donations to help make the day a success. RM Hasson donated paint through Frazee Paint, AC Catering provided a very well received buffet lunch, and local stores such as Bagel Mania, Trader Joes, Walmart, and Costco donated our snacks and water.
Quote from the senior House Captain:
“I have to say that I was blown away by the community spirit and eagerness and hard work that everyone put in to make this day so successful. Most of the volunteers were between 18 -25 years old and I have renewed confidence in the young people of the world for their incredible contribution to those homeowners in need. I want to thank all of the people that helped us make this a very successful day. I would also like to thank Mary Taylor the park manager who was so supportive, caring and good spirited to make all of this happen.”
