Most college students spend their weekends resting, studying, working, or even playing, but on National Rebuilding Day in April 2010, 35 students and 2 instructors from Long Beach City College volunteered a collective 259 hours renovating a mobile home for a neighbor in need.

Long Beach City College Carpentry Instructor Max Pena led one group of students as they took care of the more technical aspects of the repairs, such as installing a new roof, making plumbing repairs, and rebuilding the stairs with a new hand rail.  Carpenters from Glaeser Builders, Inc. volunteered their time to replace the skirt around the outside of the trailer. Another group from the Ladies of Athena Social Service Club painted the entire exterior of the residence and provided general site cleanup throughout the day.

Chick-fil-A (Long Beach Towne Center) owner, John Howard, generously donated an incredible lunch for the hungry volunteers. At the end of a long and hard day of work, 8th District City Councilmember, Rae Gabelich, visited the site and awarded the crew a Certificate of Appreciation for their generous commitment in making a valuable impact on their community.
