Connie
Connie is a 77-year old grandmother of five. Like a lot of 77-year olds, Connie
has trouble getting around, difficulty breathing, heart trouble, and struggles to
make ends meet. She is unable to keep up her house the way she used to and
can't afford to make the major repairs the home needs. But one thing this home
does not lack is love.
Every weekend Connie's home is bursting with the energy and excitement of her
five grandchildren: a one-year old granddaughter and four grandsons ages 3, 4,
9 and 10 who are each living in separate foster care homes. Their mother, who
has custody of the baby, is working hard to turn her life around through a
residential program in Long Beach and will reunite her family in 2007. At that
time, they will all live together under this one loving roof. In the meantime, they
are together every weekend because of Connie.
The devotion Connie has for her daughter and grandchildren is plain and it is
clearly mutual. They don't have much but they have one another and they
recognize that in the end, that is all they really need. But these kids and this family
deserve to feel safe in this home too.
On Saturday, October 28 th , National Make a Difference Day, Rebuilding
Together Long Beach made a difference in the life of a woman who is
making a difference in the life of five little kids everyday.
